You can always come up with a reason
Hi,
What. A. Year. Less than two weeks to go and we’ve made it through 2020.
Even in less eventful times, I love to take stock of my year and look ahead to the next during that quiet week between Christmas and New Year’s. It’s become one of my favorite end-of-year rituals. There’s always some forgotten gem or highlight to discover along the way.
So join me! Set aside a day or an afternoon on your calendar next week for your 2020 YearPlanDay. It’s something you can do alone or together with friends or family. I’ll give you everything you need to enjoy taking stock – even in this, a year like no other. Check next week’s newsletter, where I’ll walk you through it.
But first: We can always come up with a reason not to do it.
We can always come up with an excuse for not chipping in.
We can always think of a reason to complain.
We can always come up with an excuse for not putting in the extra effort.
We can always think of a reason for not being the first to say I’m sorry.
We can always think of a reason why the problem isn’t us.
We can always think of a reason to express doubt instead of giving it a chance.
We can always think of a reason to shut out a new viewpoint.
We can always think of a reason to react instead of create.
We can always think of a reason to just wait and see instead of seizing the initiative.
Giving one another the room to have different viewpoints isn’t always easy, especially when you spend a lot of time cooped up in the same house. I challenge you to try another way this week.
Put in that extra effort where you can, with coworkers and with family. Choose to go the route that leads to connection and understanding.
Is that simple? Far from it. There’s no life hack for complex personal or professional relationships.
And however you spend the holidays this strange year – whether alone, or in a big household, or with a few close friends or loved ones (if that’s an option where you are):
May you find time for reflection and all the space you need to unwind and make some peace.
Happy holidays and have a good week,
Rick
