Need a day off from the Rick rules?
Hi!
Some time back, I ran into a big GRIP fan. She said she loved my method for getting things done and getting around to what matters. But she also said she needed an escape every now and then to stay committed.
She calls those days her F*ck Rick days, which cracks me up.
About once a month or so, this woman just decides in the morning to clear her schedule, cancel all plans, and then tackle whatever work feels right that day. No agonizing about what’s important-yet-not-urgent. No to-do lists to consult. And no planned-out work blocks to follow.
The more I thought about it, I realized I do something like this, too. If I feel the need – for whatever reason – then I’ll clear my schedule for a few hours or even a full day. Sometimes I’ll take the afternoon and work on a new idea. Or I’ll enjoy working on a pet project that has nothing to do with my main priorities. It gives me the energy I need the next day, to refocus and tackle what matters.
You have to look out that those days don’t take over. But if you use your calendar to plan your own work and you make time for a Friday recap each week, then the occasional F*ck Rick day won’t get you into trouble. In fact, it may help you stay focused the rest of the time.
Disciplined work habits take a lot of energy. Giving yourself a break – and permission to slack off every now and then – can be a great way to stick it out for the long haul. And if cursing my name helps make that happen? Go right ahead. I can live with that.
Have a good week!
Rick
