I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Sean Spooner for his podcast Life and Lessons. Here’s a 5-minute clip, where we talk about how my method differs from David Allen’s. You can watch the full podcast here (45 min).
Could you be taking more risks?
We’re just over a month into the new year—a good time to pause and consider how things are going. Today’s question: could you be taking more risks?
Uncertain times like these can mean we cling to what we’ve got and who we are now. Just sit tight, you may think. Anything that’s new and exciting takes energy, which may be in short supply. And you don’t want to jeopardize what you’ve got.Â
Here are a few thoughts to shake things up:
What are you waiting for? (You can fill in what this question is about for you.)
Where do you play it safe, and why? Make a list of the possible positive outcomes and new opportunities that could come from taking a more exciting turn.
Are there things you don’t want to let go of? Maybe because of what you’ve already got? Or because you long for how things used to be?Â
Of course it may be that you shouldn’t change course, and you’re right to stay put where you are. In that case: what are you hoping for? And what concrete thing could you do this week to move one step closer to that goal?
I write a lot about how the little steps you take can lead to big things. I tend to talk less about the idea that when something makes you a little scared or uncomfortable—when it gives you sweaty palms or makes your stomach drop—you can choose to move toward that feeling.Â
I’ve made a habit of doing so. And in my experience it always makes something happen—and never something I’ve regretted.
Have a good week,Â
Rick
